80 Miles From Nowhere!

by Kevin Watson

We leave Terlingua, Texas and the Big Bend area and head to the nearest town of Alpine. Alpine has a small grocery store called Porter’s that we plan to visit, but while we are there, we decide to take the Historic Walking Tour. Along the tour, we view murals that are painted on building walls, city dumpsters, and more! The murals add so much to Alpine, and the walking tour is a great way to spend time learning about the city!

We make a quick stop in Fort Davis to have lunch at the Highland Hereford Café, then continue to the McDonald Observatory. We take a guided tour to see a few of their telescopes and learn more about the observatory. Due to the cold forecast, we decide not to go to the Star Party that the observatory holds a few times each week. We heard nothing but great things about the Star Party, so if you have time to work it into your schedule, we highly encourage you to go!

After leaving the observatory, we head down the Davis Mountains, stopping at all of the pullouts to take in the views along the way! On the way back through Alpine, we stop at Porter’s to stock up on groceries, before heading back the 80 miles to nowhere!
